Producing news stories, features and pictures for several editions aimed at the Worthing area. Worthing Plus is a monthly lifestyle magazine for Littlehampton, Arundel, Lancing and Shoreham. The Worthing Herald is a weekly newspaper for Worthing in West Sussex. Bury St Edmunds Mercury, part of Archant Suffolk PLC Reporter April 2004 – June 2004 Main reporter for a small community newspaper in West Suffolk Produced news stories, features and pictures for the weekly edition Also conducted interviews, vox pops with local residents and covered council meetings. The Bury St Edmunds Mercury is a weekly newspaper distributed to residents of Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding villages. Mud (Middlesex University’s magazine) News and Feature writer Sept. 2000 – April 2004 WORK EXPERIENCE AT SCHOOL Chichester Observer, West Sussex August 2000 Two weeks work experience assisting the news editor with daily tasks. The purpose was to put the skills I have learnt on my degree into practice. I shadowed the court reporter during visits to the crown court and wrote up press releases ready for publication. The Littlehampton Gazette, West Sussex Feb 1998 – Feb 1999 Job experience programme at a regional newspaper for 12 months. Main duties included court reporting, writing press releases and assisting with interviews. EDUCATION Middlesex University, London/Harlow College, Essex September 2000 – July 2003 BA Honours degree in Journalism (NCTJ accredited) First year modules taken in law, public affairs and ethics; fundamentals of journalism; page lay-out, design, sub-editing; writing and publishing methodologies, Humanities; Making Sense of Change; Teeline Shorthand. Course-work modules for the First Year included a portfolio and four-page magazine. Subject matter: motor cars, with double-page spreads, pictures and interviews. Second Year modules taken in Advanced Journalism, Production and Design Journalism, Semiotics, Feature Writing, PhotoJournalism, Broadcast Journalism and a 5000 word dissertation on press freedom and privacy. Third Year modules taken in Magazines, A research module: Newspapers, a re – focusing of their markets, a two week work placement at a newspaper or magazine with a 5000 word dissertation of the organisation, Proposition module including a 5000 work dissertation on a media related topic, a module covering magazines as a medium for the future and Travel writing. Harlow college awarded me the Jack Petchey award for determination and persistent effort whilst on the course. This also included a grant for Higher Education books for the university library.
